We can’t look at the future of the Internet without knowing how many there will be. Right now there are 2.2 billion users of the Internet.
Until now the Internet has been PC-based.
Are we moving towards non-electronic connectivity to the Internet? “Yes”. An example is where we can place information on an object, such as bar codes.
There are more than 3 billion mobile phone systems. Will the primary access shift from a PC-based access and to a mobile device? Also consider the Nike/i-Pod solution whereby people can keep track of how much exercise they are getting through walks or jogs.
How do you define a user? Does a user have to be human? For example, consider human meter readers being replaced by direct connectivity between meters and the utility companies.
Information will be extracted in a more semantic realm meaning information being extracted based on differences.
What about broadband? There will be the need for a more symmetrical broadband. Mobile broadband? There will be more lower frequencies making it easier to spread bandwidth at a more saturated level.
While talking about what can be done for the users, the Internet infrastructure need to keep pace.
Three main principles to live by:
- Interoperability
- Openness
- Neutrality
To balance upstream and downstream concerns we need to bring to completion issues surrounding:
- Security
- Spam
- Phishing
For me, services is what is going to have the largest impact to the Internet. Such services include conversations across the Internet between applications and devices.
One thing I did not hear in this discussion was that which dealt with: 1). Political foresight and thought (meaning a respective country’s political philosophy to embrace the use and advances of the Internet. 2). Applications being able to support respective languages.
