EGENI-Europe-Notes-Test/Friday June 20, 2008/Test-The 2008 new TLDs Catwalk.
[edit] 22:23, 8 July 2008
Werner Staub led the discussion of a TLD Catwalk, that being the introduction of TLDs. Those who participated on the panel were representatives of:
- .CYM (Welsh)
- .GAL (Galethia, a region of Spain just north of Portugal)
- .BZH (a section of France)
- .MED (Mediterranean region)
- .Sport (All things “Sports”)
- .NYC (New York City)
- .Berlin (Berlin)
- .NAI (Native American Indigenous)
Since the previous session ran over, the TLD Catwalk discussion had to be cut short. However, the main goal of this discussion was to discuss the emergence of TLDs and what this may mean.
With .CYM there are 500,000 people around the globe who speak this specific language, however it is felt .CYM will help allow this language to live as it will give the globally dispersed population a common point they can gravitate to to help maintain and grow the cultural heritage of the language.
.GAL addresses the heritage and cultural aspects of those from the region of Spain just north of Portugal.)
.BZH focuses on the Brittany region of France that is there to highlight the local region/community.
.MED is to promote technical, social and economic growth for the Mediterranean countries. Promoting the Mediterranean region for stimulating economic development within the Mediterranean region. Also this will help illustrate the cultural diversity within the region.
.SPORT – a common denominator for many across the world is sport. Sport is a very common word and spelled the same way in at least 30 different languages. This equates to 1.5 billion people covered around the globe who understand and use this word. .Sport will signify a commons where people can find all things “sport”.
.NYC - .NYC will focus on all elements of what is going on in New York City. The appropriate governance for this process? .NYC is a non-profit organization with funds going to the local educational efforts.
.Berlin – Aside from looking at .Berlin to become a focal point for the global community on all things related to Berlin, this organization is also working on the academic and political best practices to help others see what benefit a city TLD can bring to their city. This can be a definite benefit for cities through PR efforts. A city TLD can shape the digital view of a city and help with:
- Place
- Branding
- Public Diplomacy
.NAI will provide a commons for the North American Indigenous population, otherwise known as the North American Indian. There are more than 500 recognized Indian groups in the US with an equal number in Canada.
With so many gTLDs, we have lost our bearings. With city TLDs we will be able to provide more, highly targeted information.
Pan-Tribalism is a term where all tribes have been in agreement. There have only been 3 times in history were all tribes have been in agreement.
