[edit] Purpose

The purpose of the Chapitre Wallonie de l’Internet Society includes the following objectives :

1. ensuring the dynamic functioning of this chapter within the framework set forth by the bylaws and regulations of the Internet Society (Isoc), in order to assemble around the world-wide Internet network the Walloon actors who are active and responsible in all sectors of society.

2. associating itself with the objectives of the Isoc, to favor access to the Internet for the greatest possible number, while reinforcing the measures for filtering sites which are unsuitable for children.

3. promoting Wallonia and French culture throughout the world via the Internet, by strengthening the presence of the French language on the sites, with the collaboration of the chapters using French.

4. building up the relations between citizens and the Internet, by encouraging interactive multimedia training in all educational sectors, so as to instil the spirit of "knowing how to learn and find everything" so as to facilitate the reconversion, by increasing access to knowledge, ongoing training, the sharing of resources as well as by tracing out the essential passage between the world of learning and that of employment.

5. managing the new citizenship generated in real time by the virtual society, by ensuring the protection of privacy, the consideration of ethical concerns and the preservation of traditional customs (reading, writing, language, etc.).

6. regularly evaluating the effectiveness of Internet equipment and projects placed at the service of Internet users in Wallonia in order to ensure their harmonious participation in the networked society.

To achieve these objectives, the Chapitre Wallonie de l’Isoc exercises notably the following activities, without regard to any political, religious or philosophical concern :

1. It favours, by the diversity and activity of its members, the constitution of networks for reflection, technical updating, co-ordination and dissemination permitting this broad interdisciplinary team to construct a place on the world-wide Internet for the Wallonia network.

2. It strives to maintain a critical knowledge of research and development, the evolution of Internet technologies, cultural realities, social mechanisms and economic constraints, capacities for action and attitudes of participation in the cultural, political, social and economic life of Wallonia, Europe and the world in general.

3. It organises networks for reflection, events (forums, conferences, congresses) illustrating its objectives, the gathering and dissemination of data. These activities may be implemented either by the Wallonia Chapter itself, alone or in collaboration, or via the intermediary of public or private organisations, whether already existing or yet to be created.
