Acronym: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

Refers to the protocol used to send mail. SMTP servers handle the send mail request made by an email client and process the address to route the message to the correct server. To reduce bulk spam emails, many SMTP operators require authentication by users, typically in the form of a username and password.
