Dirk started his career in various marketing and sales positions at leading national and international pharmaceutical companies. Apart from his marketing duties he focused on developing global e-business solutions and developing business models for health portals while working for leading European media companies like Bertelsmann. He collected experience in e-business for more than a decade, and is besides other occupations, member of the European Commission e-Business W@tch Advisory Board. He is a frequent speaker at e-Business and domain strategy conferences and teaches on a regular basis about virtual communities at the Institute of Electronic Business in Berlin (IEB), which belongs to the University of the Arts.

Dirk started working on the idea of a top level domain .berlin for the community of Berlin already in 2000, and founded together with Alexander Schubert dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG in 2005. Meanwhile he spearheads the company as CEO with a clear focus on strategic issues dealing with the launch of .berlin in late 2008.

As CEO of dotBERLIN he says, “In the light of latest recommendations of ICANN, OECD, or NRC regarding new top level domains we are starting right in time with an innovative and logical choice to the global Internet community. New TLDs like city TLDs are desperately needed by Internet users to address their demand in individual and regional identity on the web."
