.athens is rumored to be a GeoTLD being sought after by the Municipality of Athens, Greece, in ICANN's new gTLD Program. At this point, the only corroborating evidence seems to be that the government set out to get a US trademark for ".athens" and "dot athens" in Februrary, 2010. They claimed that it was for a future registry in a letter to that office.[1]
