.net is a generic top-level domain in the Internet Domain Name System managed and operated by Verisign, a recognized leader in internet security and performance structure.[1]
In 1985, the .net TLD was added to original domain names (.com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .org) by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which was lead by Jon Postel during that time. The .net TLD was originally intended for the use of network providers only, however it is no longer restricted and anyone can register a .net domain name.
ICANN approved the application of Verisign as registry operator of the .net top-level domain name on May 25, 2001.[2]
At present, .net is the world's third largest top-level domain.[3]
