.gb is a reserved ccTLD for Great Britain.[1]

.gb was created in 1985[1] and abandoned during the 1990s. The widely used ccTLD for Great Britain is .uk. A 2022 article posted on the governmental Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO) blog opened to the public the idea of "retiring the .gb domain" in 2023. According to it, the only domain which is registered, though inactive, under .gb, is hmg.gb, standing for "His Majesty's Government". According to them, the only "con" would be that other countries could want to use the .gb ccTLD, but that would be unlikely and, in that case, the British government could "officially object" to another country using it. In the comment session, people were divided in their opinions. As of 2024, no request has been made.[2]
