In the News
Nominet, the registry for the .uk ccTLD, is in the news for its proposal to open up registrations for the English ccTLD at the second level; only third level registration is currently available. For example, the proposed change would allow domain.uk to be registered rather than domain.co.uk or domain.org.uk. The proposed registration policy changes have already been responded to by Michele Neylon, CEO of Irish registrar Blacknight Internet Solutions Ltd, as seeming to be "heavily influenced" by suggestions from law enforcement within the context of ongoing discussions in ICANN over the Registrar Accreditation Agreement. Nominet is also the selected registry provider for the proposed .wales and .cymru GeoTLDs, and it was recently noted that the websites for the proposed new strings seem to feature poor Welsh grammar, and are possibly a product of Google translate or a similar service. Nonetheless, the company has previously promised to eventually expand beyond its English-centric operations to include an office in Wales with Welsh speaking staff. |
