More information:

.republican is a proposed TLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is Rightside/Demand Media (United TLD Holdco Ltd.).[1] Their application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 4 June 2014.[2]

Community Objection[edit | edit source]

The Republican National Committee, which applied for .gop, filed a Community Objection against this application.[3] The objection failed in January 2014 after a ruling by ICC panelist Brigitte Stern. This clears the way for the applicant to continue its path towards delegation.[4]

Application Details[edit | edit source]

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The term “republican” has held a long and storied place in the history of government and politics. In the thousands of years since the Roman republic forever changed the face of government, people have identified themselves as Republicans. Individual citizens, political parties, civic and student organizations, newspapers and even cities have adopted the name and its proud heritage. Global in scope, today a passionate group of hundreds of millions of individuals and thousands of organizations identify with this word. The mission and purpose of the .republican TLD is to establish an easily recognized and accessible namespace for this large and dynamic group.

The .republican TLD is proposed by United TLD Holdco Ltd. (“United TLD”), a well-funded company established by highly experienced domain industry executives for the express purpose of securing the rights to operate a portfolio of TLDs that increase choice, expression, affinity and relevance for millions of consumers, businesses and other organizations on the web.

United TLD will be inclusive in its registration policies for this broad and generic TLD. We will not limit registrant eligibility for second-level registrations and will provide registration services to all legitimate registrants. However, we may elect to reserve and hold back certain strings from second-level registration at the time we launch the TLD.

We will not tolerate illegal activity in this TLD and will have strict policies and enforcement that provide for takedown or other appropriate forms of remedy. United TLD will adhere to and uphold all ICANN-required registration policies and comply with the requirements of the registration policy portion of the Registry Agreement."[5]

Contract Signed[edit | edit source]

On 20 March 2014 Rightside received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .republican after passing all the required processes needed to become a Registry Operator for the string.[6]

Delegation and Availability[edit | edit source]

.republican was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on 4 June 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[2]
