MIT professor Richard Bolt and Leo Boranek together with Robert Newman, Bolt's former student co-founded an acoustic consulting firm in 1948. The first project of the company was the acoustic design for the United Nations Assembly Hall in 1949.  

BBN originated from the acoustic consulting firm founded by MIT professors Richard Bolt and Leo Beranek in 1948. When the company was contracted to do the acoustic design of the United Nations Assembly Hall in 1949, Bolt asked his former student Robert Newman to join the company.
