Status: Proposed
Registry Provider: AFNIC
Type: Brand TLD
Priority #: 784 - CANAL+ FRANCE

.canalplus is a Brand TLD being proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is CANAL+ FRANCE.[1]

Application Details

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The Applicant, Canal + France SA (“Canal Plus”), is a member of the Canal+ Group. Canal Plus is a French premium pay television channel, and was launched in 1984. It is one of the leading channels for premium content and theme channels in France, French Overseas Departments and Territories, and French speaking African countries.

Furthermore, various third parties are using Canal Plus brands in their premium pay TV offerings in different countries.

The Canal+ Group is a 100% subsidiary of the Vivendi Group, one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. It has activities in music, television, film, publishing, telecommunications, Internet and video games.

Currently, Canal Plust has more than 11,1 million subscribers and, together with its Affiliates, even more than 12,7 million. Furthermore, through its Affiliates, Canal Plus has become a European leader in the production and distribution of films for theatres, as well as sports marketing.

..

At least during the initial months or even years following the delegation of the .CANALPLUS gTLD to Canal Plus, this extension is likely going to be a so-called “single registrant TLD” as contemplated by ICANN in Article 4.5 of the template Registry Operator Agreement (“Transition of Registry upon Termination of Agreement”). For the avoidance of doubt, a “single registrant TLD” is a TLD where “(i) all domain name registrations in the TLD are registered to, and maintained by, Registry Operator for its own exclusive use, and (ii) Registry Operator does not sell, distribute or transfer control or use of any registrations in the TLD to any third party that is not an Affiliate of Registry Operator.”"[2]
