.democrat is an active gTLD that was proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The Registry and manager of the TLD is Rightside/Demand Media (United TLD Holdco Ltd.).[1] The proposed application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 14 January, 2014.[2]

Application Details

The following is excerpted from applicant response to question #18:

"The term “democrat” has held a long and storied place in the history of government and politics. In the thousands of years since the Greek form of the word was coined to identify a particular form of egalitarian government, individual citizens, political parties, civic and student organizations, newspapers and even cities have adopted the name and its proud heritage. Global in scope, today a passionate group of millions of individuals and thousands of organizations identify with this word. The mission and purpose of the .democrat TLD is to establish an easily recognized and accessible namespace for this large and dynamic group.

The desired reputation of .democrat is that of an open namespace where everyone is welcomed as engaged participants. As such, we expect that participants will create innovative and specialized products and services that connect with their audience. For example, individuals might create websites that demonstrate their support for certain political ideals. Merchants might market specialized products and services. Political candidates and elected officials may establish an easily discovered online presence to promote their messages and experiences."[3]
