.edeka is a Community Brand TLD delegated in ICANN's New gTLD Program. EDEKA Verband kaufmännischer Genossenschaften e.V.' application succeeded and the TLD was delegated to Root Zone on 21 January 2016.[1][2] EDEKA is a German acronym for “eingetragener Verein”:, which is an association of nine regional cooperatives and further companies like the EDEKABANK. EDEKA group’s 2010 turnover excedded € 43 billion in total, making it the leading company in the German grocery market. The EDEKA group has been involved in grocery retail for over 100 years, and its registered headquarters is in Hamburg, Germany.

"The EDEKA community derives from the association of grocery retailing cooperatives, EDEKA e.V.. The prerequisite of becoming a member of a grocery retailing cooperative requests each potential member of a cooperative society to sign a share of the cooperative. The cooperatives consist of several hundred members, who all have a share of the cooperative. Therefore the EDEKA community members are the EDEKA e.V., and their affiliates. A cooperative is a legal entity owned and democratically controlled by its members. Members often have a close association with the company as producers or consumers of its products or services, or as its employees. The cooperative movement has been fueled globally by ideas of economic democracy in the mid-nineteenth century. Economic democracy is a socioeconomic philosophy that suggests an expansion of decision-making power from a small minority of corporate shareholders to a larger majority of public stakeholders...The applicant (EDEKA e.V.) is formed as an association and is the top body in the EDEKA community and a community member itself. All other EDEKA community members are affiliated cooperatives and other group companies, such as a bank and wholesale distributors, and about 4,500 grocery retailers who are member (shareholder) of one of the nine cooperatives and merchants who operate some 6,300 stores altogether. As such, EDEKA e.V. is essentially an entrepreneurs’ association"

It will be a Closed TLD (Single Registrant TLD).[3]

The applicant worked with Katrin Ohlmer at Dotzon, who is listed as the primary contact on the application.
