.example is a reserved special-use top level domain name. It was first reserved for use in RFC 2606, which describes current practice.

.example is accompanied by three sister second level domains that are similarly reserved for use in documentation:

• example.com
• example.net
• example.org

These reserved second level domains were also first reserved in RFC 2606, and RFC 6761 (which updates RFC 2606) expands upon prior best practices by enumerating further consideration for these (and other) special-use domains.
