.kim is an active gTLD that was proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The Registry and manager of the TLD is Afilias.[1] The proposed application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 23 January 2014.[2]

Application Details

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The .KIM will be the personal domain name of choice for individuals and families with the surname Kim. It will provide a permanent and portable online identity.

There are more than 100,000,000 people in the world with the surname Kim. The name Kim is the most common family name in Korea, representing 20% of all names. (source: http:⁄⁄www. ancestry.com⁄name-origin?surname=kim). The name is also popular outside of Asia, with over 540,000 in the United States (source: US Census Data) .

In today’s marketplace, individuals predominantly have online identities at the third level, for example, KimBae@gmail.com, through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Those individuals looking for their exact name or a variation of their family name represent the target market for the .KIM TLD. Given the statistics above, we are conservatively forecasting 20,000 Domains Under Management (DUMs) by the third year of operation. Our financial responses #45 through #50 go into detail on our funding, cost and revenue projections.

.KIM will be an open TLD, generally available to all registrants (except in the Sunrise period).

In general, domains will be offered for periods of one to ten years, but no greater than ten years. Initial registrations made in the Sunrise period may have a minimum number of years required. For example, there may be a policy that all Sunrise names must be registered for an initial term of at least five years.

There are no content or use restrictions for this TLD."[3]

Contract Signed

On 23 September 2013, Afilias received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .kim after passing the Initial Evaluation.[4]

Delegation and Availability

.kim was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on January 23, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[2]
