.sfr is a Brand TLD delegated by ICANN's New gTLD Program. Societe Francaise du Radiotelephone (SFR)'s application to ICANN succeeded, and the TLD was delegated to the Root Zone 01 December 2015.[1] [2]

Application Details

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The Applicant, Societe Francaise du Radiotelephone – SFR (hereinafter: “SFR”), is one of the largest providers (and first alternative provider) of mobile telecommunications services and Internet access providers in France. SFR SA is a 100% subsidiary of the Vivendi Group.

The Vivendi Group is one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. It has activities in music, television, film, publishing, telecommunications, Internet and video games.

At this stage, SFR SA has not developed concrete and tangible plans in order to move its online activities from SFR.fr and many other active domain names used by SFR SA and its subsidiaries, affiliates and joint ventures. However, the Applicant has different ways to make existing and future customers, visitors and stakeholders aware of the (gradual) development of a new online environment under the .SFR TLD[.]"[3]

Name Collision Issues

In October 2013 ICANN released their final assessment and mitigation plan for the Name Collision issue that was facing the New gTLD program. On 18 November 2013, ICANN announced the applied-for strings that were eligible for an alternative path towards delegation that would allow applicants to proceed without waiting for further mitigation research and plans to be published. 25 strings, including .sfr, were not eligible for the alternative path, and will have to wait for more plans to be published before continuing towards delegation.[4]
