.tirol is a new GeoTLD proposed by Punkt Tirol GmbH to ICANN's New gTLD Program for Tirol, Federal State of Austria. Nic.at was selected by Punkt Tirol GmbH to provide back-end registry solutions for the .tirol domain space.

.tirol is the independent top-level domain of the Community of Tirolers worldwide on the Internet. The regional domain names available with the .TIROL top-level domain are concise and create an identity for citizens, companies and institutions. Those providing and looking for information, goods and services in and on TIROL can thus intuitively come together. The .TIROL domain names strengthen the feeling of community amongst Tirolers, improve communication and make interaction easier, thus providing a stimulus for innovation and development. Both for Tirolers and for non-Tirolers, TIROL becomes more attractive as a region to visit, as a commercial location and as a place to live.

Along with TLDs such as .cat, .asia and .eu, .tirol and other proposed TLDs fall into the new category of GeoTLDs. The issue of new top level domains in general and .wien in particular has been discussed at various ICANN-Meetings since 2005.
