Aarti Bhavana is an independent researcher working on internet governance issues, with a specific focus on ICANN.

Career

Her legal background ensures a keen interest in human rights. She worked as a Programme Officer at the Centre for Communication Governance (CCG) at National Law University, Delhi from 2015-2017 where she closely followed Global Internet Governance institutions. Through her involvement in the ICANN world, she remains fascinated by the extent to which Global Internet Governance institutions can impact the rights of individuals. In furtherance of this, she has been working on WHOIS-related issues and is a member of the next-gen RDS PDP Working Group.

Her other areas of interest lie in institutional accountability and transparency, for which she has been closely tracking the IANA transition and the related CCWG-Accountability recommendations. She has been attending ICANN meetings since ICANN54.

She also coordinated the ‘Dirty Picture Project’, a student-run project that analyses the portrayal of women in Bollywood films.[1]

Education

She graduated from National Law University, Delhi in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in Arts and Law (Honors). While in law school, she pursued her interests by taking up seminar courses on Global Internet Governance and Copyright law, including the India satellite course of CopyrightX by Harvard Law School. She was the Managing Editor of NLU Delhi Student Law Journal for the period of 2014-2015.
