ENISA or European Network and Information Security Agency is an agency organised by the European Union. As the name suggests, the organisation primarily issues related to cyber security within the European Union. ENISA empowers the European Union and those with connections to it, to prevent, address, and respond to network and information security problems. It also advises EC on hardware/software issues and risk management in the field of technology.[1] ENISA works for the benefit of citizens, consumers, and the business community in EU territory and helps them maintain a better and more secure communication environment.[2]

ENISA publishes quarterly reports and papers.

Structure

ENISA is comprised of the following bodies:

  • Executive Director appointed by the management board selected from a list of candidates proposed by the Commission.
  • Management Board composed of representatives of EU countries and of the Commission, as well as business representatives, academics and consumers with no voting entitlement.
  • Permanent Stakeholders' Group established by the executive director. The group is responsible for giving access to the most recent information so that network security challenges can be dealt well.[3]

Activities

The agency accomplishes its tasks through various activities and groups. It works with:

  • Secure Applications and Services
  • CERT
  • Identity & Trust
  • Resilience
  • Risk Management
  • Stakeholder Relations[4]

Events

ENISA organizes events, seminars, workshops and meetings in order to increase the awareness of information security in general public.[5] The agency participated in the Symposium about health of domain names organized by ICANN in 2010.[6] It also co-ordinated in the four day workshop on CERT training arranged by ICANN and FIRST. The aim of this workshop was the development of CERT's in the European region and it was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2010.[7]

Further ENISA was also represented by a delegation in CENTR's 36th General Assembly held in June 2008.[8]
