Gonzalo Navarro is one of the members of ICANN Board of Directors selected by the Nominating Committee for a three-year term, which started on October 30, 2009 during the ICANN] Annual Meeting in Seoul, Korea. He will be serving the ICANN Board until the internet governing body's Annual Meeting on 2012. He is the youngest ICANN Director at the age of 33. Navarro is a citizen of Chile and currently serves as the Chief of Staff for the National Institute Of Industrial Property of Chile.[1] He is the chairman of ICANN's Global Relationships Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and Public Participation Committee respectively.[2] He is also a member of the Board-GAC Joint Working Group.[3]
Education
Gonzalo holds a degree in Informatics and Telecommunications Law from Universidad de Chile and a Masters in Law (LLM) from Columbia University, New York.
Career History
Before serving as Chief of Staff for the National Institute Of Industrial Property of Chile, Gonzalo was an Associate of Morales and Besa, a law firm based in Chile. In 2001, he served as Senior Adviser on International Affairs, Undersecretary of Telecommunications of Chile until 2007. During his tenure he represented his government on issues related to international trade negotiations and internet governance. For more than six years he had been active in the different activities of the Governmental Advisory Committee of ICANN before he was appointed as one of the Directors of international internet governing body in 2009.[4]
Other Activities
Navarro also provide advise to the government of Chile regarding the implementation of public policies such as Free Trade Agreements. He was involved in drafting and negotiating the contents of the telecommunications of the United States-Chile Free Trade Agreement and the China-Chile Free Trade Agreement. He also serves as the official representative of Chile to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Internet Governance Forum (IGF),Inter-American Telecommunication Commission of the Organization of American States (CITEL) and APEC Telecommunication and Information Working Group (APEC TEL).[5]
