On November 6 and 7, 2016 ICANNWiki held its 4th Edit-a-thon at the Novotel Convention Centre during the ICANN57 conference in Hyderabad, India. This Edit-a-thon was distinguished by the availability of a room and spot on the schedule, whereas in the past participants congregated in the ICANNWiki booth.

The event and its reception dinner held on conference grounds was sponsored by Amazon, a supporter of the project for the last three conferences.

Over 40 people attended the event and during the November 6 session, only standing room was available as the session progressed. Participants were introduced to the project and its values along with a brief visual editor tutorial as well as a breakdown of how to create a personal page. Commentary and help was provided by the project’s directors and its founder, Ray King.

Edit-a-Thon Results

Over 55 articles were edited, and over 35 of those were new articles. Participants worked on a wide range of content, including personal pages as well as articles on Kathy Brown (ISOC), .mil, .ss and Terminated TLDs.

Both events culminated in a dinner sponsored by Amazon and held Tuesday night, November 8 on the hotel/conference grounds. Andrew Harris, Manager of Internet Governance Policy at Amazon was available to provide gifts for raffle winners, and gifts included a laptop case, headphones, bluetooth speakers and a power bank charger. All participants were also given a t-shirt.

Throughout the Edit-a-thon we encouraged participants to approach us for any ideas they may have to improve the event or to join forces for future events in their place of origin. We encourage this practice because it has lead to a growth in Internet governance content in Kenya, Tanzania, Argentina and China. We hope to grow content in a number of languages other than English and we believe the ICANNWiki Edit-a-thon is the first step toward that goal.

Event Details

Join ICANNWiki for our fourth ICANN conference Edit-a-thon, to be held at two separate times--November 7th & 8th, between 1130 and 1300 at the Novotel HICC Convention Centre. Room details will be announced closer to the event.

The ICANNWiki Edit-a-thon is a community-centered learning and sharing event that aims to add Internet governance and ICANN-related content to ICANNWiki. This goal is achieved by hands-on instruction and sharing between ICANNWiki staff and interested participants. Adding relevant to a centralized, democratically built site such as ICANNWiki ensures that the community feels empowered to build and research information related to how the Internet is maintained as a resource. Our aim in hosting these events is to democratize the information available, shine a light on it and, if possible, translate it into Spanish,Swahili and Chinese for a stronger, more empowered, global community.
