Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications (IDNA) is a standardized mechanism for the handling of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) as defined in RFC 3490 . IDNA was developed to enable IDNs, which are encoded in Unicode, to be represented in ASCII characters. This backward-compatible representation enables IDNs to use existing protocols, such as DNS without making changes to the infrastructure.
