Jaap has been instrumental in the development of the Internet in the Netherlands and in Europe since the early 1980s. After a period of seven years in the US where he was active at the Information Technology Center from CMU, mt Xinu, and AT&T Bell Labs, he returned to the Netherlands where he joined the first independent ISP. Later he worked as a Technical Advisor for SIDN, the registry of the .NL ccTLD.
He has served in ICANN's SSAC since its inception and is co-chair of the RIPE DNS working group, and he has also served as a co-chair for the IETF ProvReg Working Group. He is a regular consultant for ICANN and a member of the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency.
Jaap Akkerhuis is also a member of the Stanford Solar Center and SuperSID Software Committee.
