Joe Abley is Director of Architecture at Dyn Inc, a position he has held since February 2015.[1]

He was formerly Director of DNS Operations at ICANN. He was also Network Architect at TekSavvy Solutions, Inc, a large, independent Canadian ISP; a member of the LonIX Advisory Council and a Director of Hopcount Limited.[2] At ICANN, Joe provided direction for the operation of ICANN's production DNS services, including the L Root Server and the systems and processes used to manage DNSSEC in the root zone of the DNS. Joe is an active contributor to the IETF, a volunteer instructor for the Network Startup Resource Center and a trustee of the New Zealand Network Operators Group.

Joe has been Executive Director of the IAB, Chair of the NANOG Steering Committee, and a member of the Programme Committee at NANOG and SANOG.

Joe has written several RFCs. He attends operator meetings including NANOG, RIPE, the Canadian ISP Summit, AfNOG, SANOG and NZNOG.

Career History

Mr. Abley was a Director of the Toronto Internet Exchange from 2007 until 2009.

At Afilias, he was the Director of Operations, Content Propagation and Resolution Services, where he was responsible for and part of the team that managed Afilias' distributed authority server platform for various Afilias-operated top-level domains.

From 2004 to 2006, Joe worked at ISC, where he had the responsibility of the architecture and operation of ISC's networks in California and in the twenty F root nameserver nodes distributed around the world, many of which he helped install. While he was at ISC, he taught workshops and tutorials around the world.[3] He has also worked at Metromedia Fiber Network (now, again, AboveNet) and Clear Communications Limited (now TelstraClear). Joe was a founder of the Auckland Peering Exchange (APE).

Education

Joe Abley received a BA in Physical and Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, which also awarded him an MA for reasons unrelated to study.

Personal Life

Joe currently lives in Ontario, Canada with two children and a long-suffering, incontinent cat named Lucy. He enjoys travel, ideally by motorcycle.
