Maarten Botterman is the current Chair of the ICANN Board. He is also the Director of GNKS Consult BV.[1] Botterman was appointed by NomCom to join the ICANN Board at the AGM in Hyderabad, 2016. He was reappointed for a second term on the ICANN Board by the NomCom at ICANN 66, the AGM in Montréal, 2019, and elected as Chairman of the Board [2]. Prior to his appointment to the ICANN Board, from 2010 to 2016, Botterman was Chairman of the Public Interest Registry and has been a board member since 2008.[3] PIR is the non-profit GTLD responsible for managing the .org and the .ngo/.ong domain and five IDN variants of .org.

Since 1987, he has been active in the development of projects and policies exploring the potential of ICT and Internet technologies for social applications. In the late 1980s, he was involved in the implementation of integrated online office environments, which foster new ways of working together. In the 1990s, he focused on the use of technology to enable working outside of the office (telework). He piloted a telework project for the Dutch public service and facilitated debates at the European level as a Scientific Officer for the European Commission.

Since then, he has focused on improving the dependability and security of networks and information systems, privacy and data protection, IPv6 deployment, justified trust in the use of the Internet, and the future of the Internet and Internet governance, including the Internet of Things.

Botterman is the Director of GNKS Consult and actively involved in global Internet development issues. Following his appointment as Chairman of the ICANN Board he stepped down as the Chairman of the IGF Dynamic Coalition on Internet of Things and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of NLnet Foundation. With the DC-IoT, he presented a first statement on IoT Good Practice Policies for the global meeting of the 10th IGF in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, November 2015. [4] More recently, he helped set up a series of capacity building events in Africa, Asia and Latin America with the aim to "enhance justified trust in the use of the Internet and email in the region" through better use of state-of-the-art standards and multistakeholder collaboration, under the banner of the Global Forum for Cyber Expertise GFCE (2018, 2019). He has long been fascinated by the interaction between Internet technology and society and has spent most of his career “getting the best out of it.” Botterman has been actively involved in ICANN since 2008, when he joined the Board of the Public Interest Registry.

Botterman has attended RIPE meetings and presented survey results conducted together with the RIRs on IPv6 deployment for a number of years.[5]
