Paul Wilson has been involved in the Internet industry for over twenty years. He has been the Director General at the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) since 1998. He actively participates in numerous activities and conferences conducted by different local and international organizations such as ICANN, RIRs, and the ASO, in order to contribute in the development, growth, and management of the internet as well as to represent the views and interests of APNIC.[1]

Other Positions

At present, Wilson is a Member of the Executive Council of the NRO; Member of the Advisory Committee of ISOC; Advisory Committee Member at DotAsia; Executive Committee Member at APNG; Grants Evaluation Committee Member at the Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF); and Vice Chairman of APIA.[2]

Award

In 2001, Wilson was inducted into the Australian Internet Awards' Hall of Fame.[3]

Career History

Before joining APNIC, Wilson served as Chief Executive Officer of Pegasus Networks, one of the pioneering private ISPs in Australia. He was one of the founding staff members of the company in 1989, and served as Technical Director until he assumed the position of CEO in 1992. At the same time, he was involved in various international internet projects in developing countries as Consultant to the United Nations.

In 1994, he worked as Principal Consultant for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). He help the organization's Pan-Asia Networking (PAN) Program by implementing its internet projects in Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Maldives, Mongolia, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea. He also helped introduce the Internet in several Latin American countries.[4]

Furthermore, Wilson has been a member of the Council of the Association for Progressive Communication (APC) for 5 years and member of the APC Executive Board for 2 years. He participated in the Working Group for Internet Governance (WGIG) process and contributed his broad knowledge of Internet governance, particularly on domain names and number addressing issues. He was nominated to become part of the Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Group of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).[5]

ICANN Involvement

As Director General of APNIC, Wilson is primarily involved in the different activities and meetings of ICANN. He represents the views and interests of the organization regarding the different issues and policies of ICANN. For example, in 2008, Wilson wrote to then ICANN Chairman Peter Dengate Thrush and President & CEO Paul Twomey expressing APNIC's unanimous support regarding ICANN's decision to sign the DNS Root Zone using DNSSEC, further requesting that it should be done as soon as possible once all issues are resolved.[6] He also attended and led the recent presentations of APNIC during the previous ICANN and ASO meetings such as:

Wilson studied Computer Science at the University of Queensland.[8]
