Protection of IGO and INGO Identifiers in All gTLDs Policy
The Protection of IGO and INGO Identifier in All gTLDs Policy outlines the provision of protection for the Red Cross, International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Governmental Organizations (IGOs), and International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs).
History
In November 2013, the GNSO Council unanimously adopted all the consensus recommendations from its PDP Working Group regarding protections at the top and second level in all gTLDs for the names and acronyms of certain IGOs and INGOs, including the Red Cross and the IOC.
On April 30, 2014, the Board adopted the recommendations from the Protection of IGO and INGO Identifiers in All gTLDs Policy that were "not inconsistent" with GAC Advice.
The IGO and INGO Identifiers Protection Policy Implementation Review Team (IRT) was formed in response to recommendations by the GNSO on January 23, 2014, and adopted by the ICANN Board on April 30, 2014. This small group of IGO, GAC, and ICANN Board representatives and ICANN staff developed a proposal to reconcile the inconsistent GNSO policy recommendations and GAC advice. From ICANN 55 to ICANN 58, the GNSO, GAC, and ICANN Board worked toward an agreement to amend the initial policy recommendations that were not yet adopted by the Board.[1]
On January 27, 2019, the Board adopted the revised policy recommendations on Protections for Certain Red Cross and Red Crescent Names in All Generic Top-Level Domains. This Consensus Policy supplemented the specific terms Red Cross, Red Crescent, Red Lion & Sun, and Red Crystal, which were previously withheld from registration.
On February 18, 2020, the revised Protection of IGO and INGO Identifiers in All gTLDs Policy was published.[2]
