In May, 2012, the punkt.wien GmbH  applied via ICANN's [[New gTLD Program|new gTLD program]] for the TLD .wien. This application was supported by the Vienna city government and administration in March on the basis of a closed concession contract for the management and marketing of the TLD .wien.
