The Widely Integrated Distributed Environment (WIDE) project is an Internet research and operation project, which became official in 1988 and whose precursor group began forming in 1982. Since its formation, led by Keio University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and The University of Tokyo, the WIDE project has introduced Internet technologies to Japan. Since 1997, it has run the m.root-servers.net,[1] and it ran the .jp ccTLD until the incorporation of Japan Registry Services (JPRS) on December 26, 2000.[2] The founder of WIDE, Jun Murai, continues to be active in the project but is also the Dean of the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University.[3]
