.eg is the ccTLD for Egypt. It is managed by the Egyptian Universities Network (EUN), Supreme Council of Universities.[1]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

It is not permissible to:

  • use the site in a way that violates generally accepted values and morals;
  • use the site in what offends countries, cities or legal persons;
  • use the site in a way that contradicts or offends monotheistic religions, public morals, order, and the prevailing custom in society;
  • registering a domain name may not be to trade it later (sale or lease).[2]

Concerning the choosing of a domain name, the rules are:

  • the name of the domain to be registered must be derived from the name of the entity or the nature of its work, otherwise it is a generic name, and the registrant must provide evidence of that;
  • in the case of registering names for trademarks, proof of the ownership of the registered entity for this name or trademark must be submitted documented by the ministry or the concerned entity;
  • it is forbidden to use the names of prophets, messengers, religious symbols, states, cities or legal persons.[3]

Government agencies and companies, and also companies from inside or outside Egypt may register directly under .eg. For each entity, different rules and required documents apply:

  • for government agencies, a letter from the authority stamped with the seal of the eagle is required;
  • for government companies, the commercial registry or the tax card is required, in addition to a letter from the government agency to which it is affiliated, stamped with the seal of the eagle;
  • for companies inside Egypt, the commercial registry or the tax card is required;
  • for companies outside Egypt, a trademark for the name to be registered is required, provided that the trademark is registered inside Egypt or that it is registered internationally in accordance with the Madrid Convention on Trademarks with WIPO, and the company has a representative or agent inside Egypt.[4]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

There are 14 second-domain names under the .eg TLD. The rules for registering under this domain differ according to the type of domain as described below:

  • gov.eg:
    • for governmental agencies and companies. A letter from the government agency stamped with the seal of the eagle is required;
  • .edu.eg:
    • for governmental universities and institutes. The document providing the decision to establish the university or institute is required;
    • for private and national universities. The document with the decision to establish the university or institute is required, provided that it is one of the universities included in one of the recognized lists issued by the Ministry of Higher Education or the Supreme Council of Universities. In case of that the establishment decision is not issued, the approval of the Secretary of the Supreme Council of Universities is required in order to register a domain name;
    • for any entity, company or educational center affiliated with any of the government ministries. A letter from the government ministry to which it is affiliated, stamped with the seal of the eagle, is required stating the establishment of this entity under the umbrella of the ministry for educational or research purposes;
  • .ac.eg:
    • for private institutes and academies. The document with the decision to establish the university or institute is required, provided that it is one of the universities included in one of the recognized lists issued by the Ministry of Higher Education or the Supreme Council of Universities;
    • for public, private and international schools. A document providing the decision to establish the school issued by the Ministry of Education or a decision by the Ministry to teach international curricula such as American or British.
  • sci.eg:
    • for entities working in the research and scientific sector. It is necessary an approved document proving the entity's affiliation with the Ministry of Higher Education, the state for scientific research, or one of its affiliated entities or bodies.
  • .com.eg, .net.eg and .info.eg:
    • for government companies and companies inside Egypt. The registration of ranges with the names of company products and services is allowed with an acknowledgement by the registering company of the dependency of the name of the domains to be registered and proof of the existence of this product or service to the company, such as the presentation of a promotional folder, photo of the product, promotional campaign or any physical image in any form used to promote the product or service. The commercial registry or the tax card is required. In addition, for government companies, a letter from the government agency to which it is affiliated, stamped with the seal of the eagle is required to register a domain name. For companies inside the country, a copy of the personal card of the owner of the company or the person authorized by the company to deal with domain registration is required;
    • for companies outside Egypt: a trademark for the name to be registered is required, provided that the trademark is registered inside Egypt or registered internationally in accordance with the Madrid Convention on Trademarks with WIPO, and the company has a representative or agent inside Egypt.
  • . tv.eg:
    • for regional and satellite TV channels and programs of the Radio and Television Union. A letter from the Radio and Television Union stamped with the seal of the Republic is required;
    • for private Egyptian satellite channels subject to the supervision and control of the Investment Authority and all programs offered to it. A letter from the Investment Authority stamped with the seal of the Republic is required;
    • for non-Egyptian satellite channels licensed to exploit space on the Nilesat satellite. The registration is done according to the licensing contract.
  • .org.eg: for national associations. The document with the decision to establish the association or organization is required.
  • .sport.eg: for entities, clubs and sports federations. A letter from the sports authority stamped with the authority's seal is required.
  • .name.eg: for individuals. A copy of the applicant's identity card is required.[4]

Characters[edit | edit source]

The domain name must begin with a letter or a number (A-Z) - (0-9), and no space is allowed between the letters of the name to be registered. A minimum of two characters is allowed.[3]
