The Korean Internet & Security Agency (KISA) is the registry manager for the Republic of Korea's .kr ccTLD, as well as the internationalized version, .한국.[1] KISA was established during a governmental reorganization in 2009.[2] KRNIC, the network information center for the Republic of Korea, was moved underneath KISA at that time.[3] KRNIC performs administrative and technical registry operations for .kr and .한국.[1]
.kr and .한국[edit | edit source]
The .kr ccTLD and its internationalized equivalent, .한국, are restricted to use by companies, organizations, and individuals who have a postal address within the Republic of Korea.[4]
.kr[edit | edit source]
In the .kr domain, registration is available at the second level, or at the third level under a variety of use-restricted second level domains. As well as the SLDs listed below, there are region-specific SLDs for use by "any organization, company and/or individuals connected with that region" (seoul, busan, daegu, incheon, gwangju, daejeon, ulsan, gyeonggi, gangwon, chungbuk, chungnam, jeonbuk, jeonnam, gyeongbuk, gyeongnam, and jeju).[4]

.한국[edit | edit source]
The .한국 domain was approved through the IDN Fast Track process,[6] and delegated to KRNIC in 2011.[7] Also referred to by KRNIC by its phonetic approximation, .hankuk, the domain has seen limited adoption. As of March 2021, the domain had approximately 20,000 active registrations.<ref name="stats"> Registration is available at the top level, and the registrant must include at least one Hanguel character.[4]
