The .ps domain was first applied for in 1997, by a group of Palestinian technology professionals. This request was denied.
After a year of lobbying effort, .ps was reserved, but not granted. A UN Resolution granted full membership to Palestine in 1999. In 2000, .ps was listed in the ISO 3166 and the .ps was assigned to the Palestinian Occupied Territories. On March 23, 2000 .ps became operational and gov.ps went live as the first domain to use the string.
