The Coalition for Digital Africa is an initiative launched by ICANN to bring together organizations united in their commitment to expanding the Internet in Africa and supporting the development of Africa’s digital economy. The Coalition’s main goal is to improve connectivity across Africa. The Coalition promotes innovation and encourages entrepreneurial efforts aimed at strengthening the Internet infrastructure, building technical capacity across the continent, and enabling people to use the Internet using their own keyboards and scripts.[1] The initiative was officially launched on December 1, 2022, at the 17th annual Internet Governance Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.[2]

Projects

  1. Study of the African Domain Name System industry landscape
    • Builds on methodology from the 2016 African DNS Market Study[3][4]
  2. Getting email systems and communication platforms within academia ready for Universal Acceptance (UA) and Email Address Internationalization (EAI)
    • Phase 1 (July 2022-June 2023): ICANN is training Association of African Universities (AAU) members.[5]
  3. Installing two IMRS clusters in Africa — one in Kenya; the other location to TBA.[6]
