.ls is the ccTLD for Lesotho. It is managed by the Lesotho Network Information Centre Proprietary (LSNIC).[1]

Delegation History[edit | edit source]

The .ls domain was delegated to the National University of Lesotho in 1993.[2] Initially, technical registry operations were handled by the University of Rhodes in South Africa.[2] Registration was limited to the third level under specific second-level domains.[2] In 2012, legislation passed which gave the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) the responsibility of managing, or designating an entity to manage, the .ls domain.[3] The LCA was the registry operator for four years, until LsNIC was formed in January of 2016.[3] Technical operations were shifted to LsNIC in 2017, and in 2018 management of the domain was transferred to LsNIC.[3]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

Any natural person, company or organization can register a domain name under the .ls domain.[4]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

The following Second-level domains are available for registration: ".co.ls", ".org.ls", ".net.ls", ".info.ls", and ".biz.ls".[5]

Only The Lesotho Government organizations are eligible to register a domain name under ".gov.ls".[4]

Characters[edit | edit source]

To be valid, a domain name:

  • must use only alphanumeric characters and dashes (-);
  • must not begin or end with dashes (-);
  • must not have more than 63 characters;
  • must not have spaces between them.[4]
