Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]
Any entity from San Marino or abroad may request the assignment of a domain name.
Domain names with evident pornographic, offensive, or discriminatory references or content relating to gender, race, religion, or political beliefs will not be assigned.[2]
Reserved Domain Names[edit | edit source]
The following names are considered reserved:
- names consisting of one or two characters;
- units of measure (e.g., Km, MHz, etc.);
- protocol names (e.g., http, ftp, telnet);
- technology names (e.g., gsm, umts, esp);
- gTLD names (e.g., com, net, org, biz);
- geographic names and abbreviations of the Republic of San Marino, names and abbreviations of Castles, and San Marino place names;
- names related to gambling and betting;
- trademarks, symbols, flags, logos, and those reserved by law and regulations.
All names representing San Marino institutions in general, public administration, State Autonomous Companies, general institutions, or domain names capable of representing them (e.g., poste.sm) and names reserved by regulations and laws are also considered reserved and are therefore not assignable to other organizations.[2]
Characters[edit | edit source]
A domain name under .sm is subject to the following limitations:
- the minimum length allowed is 3 characters and the maximum length is 63 characters;
- the following characters are allowed: digits (0-9), letters (a-z), hyphen (-);
- a domain cannot begin or end with a hyphen (-).[2]
