Characters[edit | edit source]
To be registered on the .nz Register, a domain name must use only lowercase letters (a-z), digits (0-9) and the '-' hyphen. A .nz domain name can use vowel letters with a macron (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) in addition to the characters. However, a domain name must not:
- be longer than 63 characters;
- use a hyphen as the third or fourth character unless it is an IDN (Internationalised Domain Name);
- end in any of the following suffixes and their IDN versions that might mislead or confuse: ".gov.nz", ".government.nz", ".com.nz", ".edu.nz", ".nic.nz".[2]
