Jun Murai is an expert in the field of Computer Communications and Operating Systems. He is recognized as the Father of the Japanese Internet.[1] He was instrumental in establishing the Japanese University Network (JUNET) in 1984. Murai is also the founder of the WIDE Project.[2] He is currently serving as Dean of Faculty and Professor of the Environment and Information Study at SFC, KEIO University in Japan.[3]

ICANN Involvement

Mr. Murai served on ICANN's founding Board of Directors from 1998-2003.[4] He represents the WIDE Project on the Root Server System Advisory Committee.[5]

Awards

Jun has received several accolades from different organizations. His most recent award was the 2011 IEEE Internet Award in recognition of his contributions to the development and deployment of the global Internet, especially in Japan and the Asia Pacific Region.[6] He has also received the following awards:

  • Jonathan B.Postel Service Award from the Internet Society, August 16, 2005
  • Personal Award from Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, USAGI Project: IPv6 Implementation and Verification, October 6, 2004
  • Personal Award from Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, KAME Project, October 2002
  • Personal Award from Minister for Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, June 1, 2000
  • The Best Paper of '90s Award, ISPJ, 2000[7][8]
