.bangaluru was a proposed GeoTLD in ICANN's new gTLD program, with an intent to apply coming from a joint venture between Minds + Machines and India TL Domain with support from the Mayor of the city of Bengaluru.
The TLD was somewhat vexing given that it is a intentional misspelling of the city's name. The official name of the city is Bengaluru (with an "e"), though it was known as Bangalore during colonialism, the proposed GeoTLD, however, is spelled .bangaluru. It is not clear why the name is being spelled this way.[1] Another issue with the announcement is that the letter of approval from the Government is dates August, 2011, despite the fact that it was made public in February, 2012.[2]
No application for .bangaluru was submitted in ICANN's first round of its open gTLD expansion program.
