Delegation is a term that, in the Domain Name industry, refers to the process of entering a new Top Level Domain (TLD) into the Root Zone of the Internet. The Root Zone is the authoritative database for the Internet, and entering a new TLD finalizes the process of making the TLD "live" on the web. Delegation is facilitated by ICANN and IANA.[1]

New gTLD Program[edit | edit source]

During ICANN's expansion round that opened for applications in 2012, 1,930 applications were received for new gTLDs. By 23 October 2013, the first 4 TLDs from this program were delegated to the Root Zone.
