The Alexander von Humbolt foundation (Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in German) is a foundation that offers flexible sponsorship programs for researchers at all stages of their careers. Its research fellowships and awards enable outstanding scientists and scholars from abroad to complete long-term research stays in Germany. It offers German research scientists and scholars an opportunity carry out a research project abroad as a guest of one of more than 24,000 Humboldt Foundation alumni worldwide. It also promotes international cultural dialogue and academic exchange.[1]
The foundation’s alumni network unites well over 26,000 Humboldtians in more than 140 countries worldwide, including 51 Nobel Prize winners (2015)[2]
Funding
Alexander von Humbolt receives most of its funding from the following institutes;
- Federal Foreign Office (AA) (33.3%)
- Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (57.6%)
- German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) (4.7%)
- Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU) (0.9%)
