.rw is the ccTLD for Rwanda. It is managed by Rwanda Internet Community and Technology Alliance (RICTA) Ltd.[1]
Delegation History[edit | edit source]
The .rw ccTLD has seen multiple efforts for redelegation from its first operator, NIC Congo - Interpoint SARL, to another Rwandan entity.
In 2002, the Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RITA) requested ICANN to revoke .rw from NIC Congo due to inadequate local service. No formal request followed, and therefore no action was taken.
In 2005, RICTA, a non-profit, was established with the mandate to develop policy and act as trustee for .rw.
In 2006, RICTA and RITA formally requested redelegation, facing opposition from NIC Congo due to perceived lack of support and concerns over multiple redelegation attempts. Negotiations stalled, and the request was closed.
In 2011, RICTA re-registered as a company due to internal issues and received a mandate from Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) to manage .rw. A MoU signed with RURA formalized RICTA's role as .rw administrator.
In 2012, RICTA filed a redelegation request with ICANN. After several updates and rejections from NIC Congo, processing continued with a request on 18 January 2012. The redelegation was granted.[2]
