Singapore Network Information Center - SGNIC is national registry service provider for .sg domain names in Singapore.[1] It also provides registration for SLDs, such as .com.sg, .org.sg, .net.sg, .edu.sg, .gov.sg, and .per.sg. Its responsibilities include the management of other information services and formulating policies regarding domain registration. In 1997, SGNIC was aquired by the National Computer Board (NCB), though it was later transferred to IDA when the government merged NCB with the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore.[2]

In February, 2011, SGNIC auctioned premium domain names with single/double alphabet, single/double digits and other PDNs starting at a base price of SG$600, and going up to SG$2000.[3]

SGNIC and ICANN[edit | edit source]

SGNIC is affiliated with ICANN. It signed an Exchange of Letters with ICANN in 2009 for the betterment of Internet security in Singapore.[4] It hosted ICANN41 held in Singapore in June, 2011.[5]

IDN[edit | edit source]

In June, 2011 SGNIC announced the launch of Internationalized Domain Names, which were to be available for registration for everyone after December, 2011. SGNIC was to provide second level domains for .新加坡 and .சிங்கப்பூர் which represent Singapore in Chinese and Tamil respectively.[7]
