NIC Mexico or Network Information Center Mexico is the ICANN accredited organization responsible for management of the .mx ccTLD, and the National Internet Registry, which provides IP space to registrars.[1] It started accepting registrars for registration of .mx domain names in 2008 and now has 180 registrars.[2] NIC Mexico is a founding member of LACNIC and LACTLD, besides being an active member of the ccNSO and ICANN communitiy.[3] Together with LACNIC, it is struggling for a Latino TLD to get approved by ICANN.[4]
NIC Mexico signed an Accountability Framework with ICANN in 2009.[5]
History
In 1989, The Technological Institute of Advanced Studies of Monterrey (ITESM), in Monterrey, Mexico established its network. In 1995, it was given the official name of Network Information Center of Mexico. In the beginning, the .mx name space was reserved only for academic domains, and therefore it had only 45 domains registered until 1992. The registration was totally stopped in 1996 and was reopened in 2009. From that point on, NIC Mexico has been working on promoting .mx in the country and has so far registered 0.5 million domain names.[6]
Events
NIC Mexico co-sponsored Technical Aspects Workshop for ccTLDs in September, 2010.[7] It sponsored the ICANN Mexico City meeting in 2009, when it was also celebrating its 20 year anniversary as an organization.[8]
