Genious Communications is the 5th registrar to be created and accredited by ICANN in Africa,[2] and the first ICANN accredited registrar located in North Africa.[3] Their clients are spread across the Middle East, Morocco, Spain, and France,[4] and they continue to work themselves into markets outside of Morocco.[5] They have partnered with eNom. Genious Communications is a member of AfriNIC.[6]
Founder and CEO, Hamza Aboulfeth, began working towards the creation of Genious Communications in 2003, when he was only 17 years old. By 2007, at the age of 21, Genious had become a reality.[7] The company was started on capital worth $1,200, which was used to buy the first computer.[8]
Geographic Background
Morocco has become one of the top 3 largest markets for domains in Africa. Their ccTLD is increasingly used, and the population has continually greater access to computers and Internet connections. Morocco also offers one of the cheapest ccTLDs in Africa.[9] Their Cassablanca offices are located in Morocco's first industrial park, which largely houses software and IT ventures.[10] Mr. Aboulfeth notes that the need for ICT services was so real in Morocco that when he was starting Genious Communications he did not have to solicit customers, but rather his first customers, some of them large corporations and organizations, sought him out.[11]
