.cruise is a proposed new TLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program.
Applicants[edit | edit source]
- Cruise Lines International Association Inc.- The largest association of major cruise lines with 26 members operating in North America. It operates under an agreement with Federal Maritime Commission under the Shipping Act of 1984. Tom Hohman, Chief Financial Officer, of the company is the main contact person in the application.[1]
- Viking River Cruises Ltd.- It is the leading river cruise line.[2]
GAC Early Warnings[edit | edit source]
Both .cruise applications were issued a GAC Early Warning from the representative of Australia and GAC Chair, Heather Dryden. The warning system is noted as a strong recommendation on behalf of national governments to the ICANN Board that a given TLD application should be denied as it stands. Applicants are encouraged to work with objecting GAC members.[3]
The warning states that the applicant is "seeking exclusive access to a common generic string .. that relates to a broad market sector," which Ms. Dryden notes could have unintended consequences and a negative impact on competition.[4]
