More information:

.skydrive is a Brand TLD being proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is Microsoft.[1]

Application Details

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The mission of Microsoft Corporation is to transform the way people work, play and communicate throughout the world through the provision of software, services and hardware. Microsoft does business throughout the world, with offices in more than 100 countries and over 90,000 employees. Every day, billions of consumers and businesses work, play, and communicate using Microsoft software, services, and hardware.

The SkyDrive® hosting service allows users, at no charge, to store files and to access their personal files from any computer with an internet connection. SkyDrive users can share photos and files or collaborate on documents with contacts Over 100 million people in most countries of the world have used the SkyDrive hosting service.

The missions of the .skydrive registry are to lay the groundwork for providing consumers and businesses who interact with Microsoft through the .skydrive registry with a more secure and authentic experience, to protect the SkyDrive brand, and to promote the SkyDrive hosting service.

In our 2010 Annual Report, we stated, “We believe that delivering innovative and high-value solutions through our integrated platform is the key to meeting customer needs and to our future growth”. The SkyDrive hosting service exemplifies this innovation and integration – for example, using the power of the Microsoft cloud and taking advantage of HTML5, SkyDrive customers can access their photos or Office Web Apps natively integrated into some devices like the Windows Phone or through a web interface on any device.

We are assessing the opportunities that a new gTLD has for the delivery of secure communications, products and services.
