TUI’s predecessor, the Preussag company, was founded as a coal-mining interest in 1924, and later became an important player in German industry. In 1997, Preussag acquired Hapag Lloyd AG, one of Germany’s greatest transport and travel companies, with a large selection of aircraft, cruise ships, and travel agencies. Realizing the opportunities available in this new market sector, the company sold most of its non-travel-related assets, and began dedicating itself to the provision of outstanding travel planning services. In 2002, the company officially adopted the TUI AG name, and since that time has continued to build its world-class reputation. | TUI’s predecessor, the Preussag company, was founded as a coal-mining interest in 1924, and later became an important player in German industry. .tui is a GeoTLD that was initially submitted as a Brand TLD being proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is TUI AG.[1]
This string, applied for by its applicant as a Brand TLD, was deemed a Geographic TLD by ICANN's Geographic Names Panel, referring to a province in Burkina Faso. Geo TLDs must have government support in order to pass evaluation and proceed towards delegation.[2] The applicant failed the Initial Evaluation because of this geographic ruling. It requested and passed Extended Evaluation.[3]

It is envisaged that TUI will be the sole registrant of domain names within the TLD, which will ensure that such domain names only are used for purposes authorized by TUI in its online brand promotion and customer service efforts. A draft version of the anticipated Domain Name Registration and Use Policy for the “.TUI” space is provided at the end of the answer to question 18(c)."[4]
