John Jeffrey is the General Counsel and Secretary of the ICANN Board.[1] [2] On September 14, 2012, CEO and President Fadi Chehadé assumed his position and made a number of personnel and hierarchy changes. It was confirmed that John Jeffrey would continue on in his current role and would be one of a select number of executives reporting directly to the President.[3]

Education

John holds a political science degree from the University of Dayton and a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law.[4]

Career History

Jeffrey joined ICANN in 2003. He has worked with individuals, companies, and non-profit trusts in various capacities, such as litigator, corporate and intellectual property lawyer, and business executive.

Before joining ICANN, he worked at the Silicon Valley Streaming Media/Internet radio start-up Live365, where he was the Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and General Counsel. In this position, John managed the corporate and strategic development, marketing, public relations, and governmental, business & legal affairs of Live365. He was actively involved in framing the issues and public discussion surrounding the US Copyright Offices’ Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP), as it related to Digital Sound Recording Performance Royalties for Webcasting. He assisted in leading a grassroots effort resulting in the passing of copyright legislation about webcasting royalties for small webcasters. He also had his own media consulting business known as Point Break Media.[5]

He has also worked as the Director of Business and Legal Affairs at Discovery Communications, Inc. Before which, he worked at TCI Interactive as a General Counsel and Vice President of Business Matters. He has been a member of California, US Federal District Court since 1988.[6]

Awards and Honors

In November 2002, John was recognized in the technology industry as #13 in Streaming Magazine's list of the 50 Most Influential People in Streaming Media.

Publications

Jeffery has published several articles, and has been interviewed and quoted in print and electronic media internationally on legal and business issues relating to media convergence and various Internet-related issues.[7]
