Brent Carey is the Domain Name Commissioner for .nz. He authorises and sanctions registrars, enforces .nz policies, operates a dispute resolution service and generally ensures the .nz market operates fairly for everyone. Brent has an LLB and BA from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and a Graduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution ( Industry) from BoxHill Institute of TAFE, Melbourne, Australia. In the iCANN world, Brent has primarily been involved in the CCNSO. He is a member of the working group on the retirement of ccTLDs since joining the ICANN environment in March 2018. More recently, he has become involved in cross community work on privacy, abuse detection and reporting, registrants rights and removal of Child Sexual Abuse Material. He is a lifetime member of the Australian Privacy Foundation and a member of the International Council for Online Dispute Resolution, Netsafe, and the New Zealand Marketing Association. Since 2012, he has been a Founding Director of family run Green Meadows Beef, an e-commerce small goods local and export business.


Career History[edit | edit source]

Since January 2018, Brent has been the Domain Name Commissioner at Domain Name Commission Ltd, InternetNZ Group after a brief time as the Commission’s Chief Operations and Policy Officer. Company Director Green Meadows Beef 2012 - present Between 2012 and 2017 Brent was a Senior member of the Dispute Resolution Team at the Office of the Australian Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman In 2011 and 2012 Brent was a Senior Project Manager at the Victorian Department of Justice helping establish Victoria’s first Independent Broad Based Anti-Corruption Commission and the creation of a new government entity Court Services. Brent worked in the privacy field in Australia between 2002 and 2010. He held various Senior Privacy roles at the Office of the Victorian Privacy Commissioner, the Victorian Department of Justice and as an Advisor to Australian Democrats Senator Natasha Stott Despoja. In 2004 for a year he was seconded to the Victorian Institute of Teaching as their Instructing Solicitor for teacher disciplinary hearings. From 1999 to 2002, he was an Investigating Officer at the Office of the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner.
